Get Your Basics Right
Good skin starts with good habits and that means getting the basics of skincare essentials right and knowing what and when to use them. Noob or not, here’s a refresh on the basics of what you should be using every day.
Step 1: Cleanse
Washing your face is as basic and essential as taking a shower every day. As your skin comes into contact with dirt, environmental pollutants, and any other factors each day, you should wash your face to help remove those elements from the skin. Ideally you should be washing your face twice a day, morning and night, to prevent clogged pores, dullness and breakouts. And if you wear makeup, you should remove it first before cleansing.
Step 2: Tone
Toners are no longer just astringents for removing residue. Think of them as skin supplements delivering an extra dose of nutrients as well as priming the skin for better absorption of the other products in your regimen.
Step 3: Treat
Essences or serums are packed with concentrated doses of active ingredients. These skin elixirs can help to alleviate issues like dark spots and lines and wrinkles. What’s recommended is to start the day with a general antioxidant serum to protect skin from daily aggressors. For night, consider layering or using multiple products to address different concerns at the same time. For example, try a vitamin C serum for all over then dab on another for hyperpigmentation.
Step 4: Eye care
The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than the rest of the face, which is why you need a separate care product for this area. For undereye bags, look for ingredients like caffeine, peptides and hyaluronic acid to soothe and hydrate. For dark circles, look for brightening ingredients like vitamin C, kojic acid and niacinamide.
Step 5: Moisturize
The most basic function of a moisturizer is to hydrate, soften and smoothen the skin. As our skin naturally loses the ability to retain moisture as we age, this is why we apply moisturizer as the last step of a skincare to help seal moisture and prevent water loss through the outer layers of skin.
Step 6: Protect
Every day we are exposed to UV rays that can damage the skin over time, causing premature signs of aging like enlarged pores, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. This is where a daily sunscreen of at least SPF 30 comes in as the last line of defence.
When You Are Ready To Go That Extra Step …
Step 7: Exfoliate
Why is it necessary? Your skin is constantly renewing itself where cells rise to the surface, gradually dying and shedding off to make way for new and younger skin underneath. However, as you age, this cell renewal slows down and dead skin cells can accumulate, leaving the skin with a dull appearance as well as blocking skin from receiving any goodness from skincare products. By exfoliation, it aids skin regeneration as dead skin cells are removed.
Step 8: Mask
Whether in cream or sheet form, facial mask works under occlusion to deliver ingredients and be absorbed more efficiently. Choose between sheet or paper masks or overnight masks or sleeping packs to help trap moisturizing ingredients in. Clay or mud masks on the other hand, help to absorb oil and can have a mild exfoliating effect, making them great for oily skin. With this, you can target just a few areas instead of the entire face.
